Allen celebrates Black History Month

Allen Public Library and Bach to Books will host several special events to celebrate Black History Month. The library will screen a series of historic movies with all-black casts or themes at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays throughout the month.

Feb. 6 and 20 catch the movie Green Pastures, ranked ninth best movie in 1936.
In addition, viewers will screen rare footage of the 1950 television program, Beulah.
Feb. 13 screen Cabin in the Sky, a 1943 musical creation story with actress, Ethel Waters.
Feb. 20 screen Pinky, a 1949 movie about a light-skinned black passing for white.
Feb. 27 screen Carmen Jones, a 1954 movie considered one of Otto Preminger’s best.
The library is located at 300 N. Allen Drive.

Ubuntu in Motion

The Allen Public Library will celebrate Black History Month with an exhibit, Ubuntu in Motion, an interactive dance floor installation inside the library’s east entrance. The library is located at 300 N. Allen Drive. For library hours or for more information, call 214-509-4900.

Green Pastures at the library

Allen Public Library will present Green Pastures as part of its weekly Black History Month movie night at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The film, featuring an all-black cast, ranked ninth best movie in 1936 in the Film Daily annual poll of critics, and was banned in many countries. The evening also will include rare footage from Beulah, a 1950s television program.

Hearts for Smarts Valentines for your sweetheart

Valentine cards and t-shirts designed by children and produced by Educational First Steps can be purchased at any Dallas area Tom Thumb Store or on-line at www.educationalfirststeps.org through Thursday, Feb.15.

The cards come wrapped in boxes of 14 and cost $10. T-shirts are available in four different designs and are $10. All proceeds from the sale of these items go back into funding EFS programs which are sponsored by Dallas Mavericks Guard, Devin Harris, Fox 4 Anchor, Baron James, Tom Thumb, FedEx Kinko's, The Art Institute of Dallas, and others. EFS is a non-profit organization which helps underprivileged and at risk children in the Dallas area.

Area Tom Thumb stores are located at 900 W. McDermott Drive in Allen and 7801 Alma Drive in Plano.

Chamber to host local leaders

Allen Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Eggs and Issues, presenting elected officials and local leaders discussing current legislative issues ranging from local to national in scope, from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23 at On the Border restaurant, 213 Central Expressway North. Last day to register for CCCCD workshop for parents of college bound kids

Collin County Community College District will present Destination College, a free workshop for parents of college-bound students from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 at Collin’s Spring Creek Campus Conference Center at 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.
The workshop will include information on financial aid, standardized tests, academic expectations and the admissions process. Parents in attendance whose students are planning to attend CCCCD will be entered in a drawing for tuition scholarships. Also, a light dinner will be served.

Catch a classic movie in honor of Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month the Allen Public Library will show films with black casts and African-American themes at 7 p.m. Tuesdays Feb. 6-27. The library is located at 300 N. Allen Drive.

The movies scheduled are Green Pastures, Feb. 6; Cabin in the Sky, Feb. 13; Pinky, Feb. 20; and Carmen Jones, Feb. 27.

At 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 6 and 20 prior to the film features, two rare segments of the 1950s television program, Beulah will be featured with Ethel Waters and Hattie McDaniel.

Entertain the young ones at the library today

Fun Ones will contine at Allen Public Library at 10:15 a.m.: today at 300 N. Allen Drive. The story time for children, age 1, and accompanying adult will be 20 minutes of language interaction, songs and rhymes.
